We had some fun plans for this weekend. We were FINALLY going to spend a nite in a hotel w the kids, just chillaxing, swimming in the pool, enjoying the big breakfast buffee, then on Sunday go to church and see friends in a different city. Well. This horrible mom decided to come down with a cold!!! Hello??? Bad timing anyone? I felt really bad telling the kids that "Mom is too tired to pack up all the stuff for 9 people!" Hubby was gone helping his brother repairing his car, that decided to come down with something too...
Well. In the end the 2 oldest took the train to the city we had planned on visiting, they are spending the nite with their friends. The rest of us hung out all afternoon, Hubby and I zonked out on one couch each, and getting up some time later, I found a smidgen of energy.
We loaded up the 5 kids in the car, and went to Hop Lop (indoor playground), followed by a late dinner at McDonald's. Coming home the 2nd youngest was already asleep, and now it's only the oldest of the 5 that's still awake.
We had a nice day after all, and again I feel thankful for our "basic" family life.
I got to be with 6 of my 8 favourite people, and again I fell a bit more in love with my Hubby.
Just because it's so hard not to.... :)
I might seem ultra cheesy who is always gushing over him... but why not???
It's been over 15 years now since we started dating, and I know just how lucky I am to have him.
I'm too lazy to climb a mountain to declare my love for him from high up there. I don't have the money to fully show him how much I think of him, so this is a good way to share my feelings.
I love him.
Tons.
And every day I pray to grow old with him.
Surrounded by our kids and their families.
Cheesy?? Maybe for those that are looking for something else, for those who are not happy about where they are...
But I am. And I wouldn't want it any different.
WELCOME!!
Blogger Boss needs to decide what this is going to say about how crazy her life is & how she loves coffee & walks with her hubby.

15 months in Finland.
Time for another letter to America!! To give an update on how things are going in the old world. It's been 15 months since the boat arrived at the harbor... or I guess when our Finnair flight hit the ground in Helsinki. A lot has truly taken place since...
The move itself. Getting an apartment, and trying our first little jumps and hops, like a babybird learning how to fly, in a new country. Starting to build a new house. Starting a new business. New schools, language, Dr's, blah blah blah....
We moved again, and now live in the house we started building, the new company is growing roots, things are picking up.
A new baby is on the way.
The kids have a year of school here stuffed in their backpacks of life.
Lately there have been many things happening back in Canada and USA. Some friends of mine are expecting babies right around the same time as I. I'd love to "grow big" along side with them. I miss them. A dear friend has moved on to eternity, and she'll be missed. One of my dear sister-in-laws won't be my sis-in-law much longer... and that hurts, but she know's she'll always be my special L. I wish I could be there for many reasons at times. I get "homesick" for people. Sometimes for places too, but not much. I don't miss "stuff", I miss people.
Here I have laid the ground work for new friendships. Looking back in my life, I realize that I've "started new" many many times. Becoming a new friend to someone does not scare me. I love meeting new people, and I find that everyone is interesting in their own way. One thing I miss here is my ability to talk to anyone I want to. I like to talk to old ladies, but here the language barriare slows me down a lot. Very frustrating at times. After learning Swedish growing up, and now also being fluent in English, makes the road of learning Finn seem very long and bumpy at times. (I know how much work is involved in becoming equally fluent in 2 languages) I'm not 18 anymore either... The age I was when I spent 2 months in USA and learned English.
Now I'm mostly at home during the weeks, so the opportunities to use Finnish are sometimes far in between. Lately I've been to some "in home sales" parties. Great chance to practice Finn! And to listen to the person presenting their products. I actually "get it" every now and then. Finn is very different from most languages, so it's not like it "sounds like" or resembles any of the common Europeean languages either (which would greatly help me out). So. I struggle. And I'm taking small steps forward.
At least I can relate to how the kids feel! They are fortunately catching on faster than their mom thou...
We are going through our 2nd fall here, and it's interesting to experience the seasons change for the 2nd time. I'm curious and a bit scared to see if this February will be as cold as last one. Will we still have tons of snow at the end of March? Right now the trees are all dressed in sparkling colors, but their gowns are falling rapidly. Soon we'll hit that gray November... and I'll be looking forward to snow to brighten up the days. It's already getting dark quite early, and it's only getting darker. We are planning to spend Christmas at home. I hope I have energy to bake all the traditional Christmas goodies, and spend the holiday relaxing in front of the fireplace.
So... the latest review of life here?? It's good. I still like the fact that things are so close. I still don't miss crossing the international border crossing between Windsor and Detroit. I don't miss Detroit traffic, and my hubby stuck in it on the way home from work... We have seen each other a lot more this year, and that was one of our goals. The kids are adjusting, and they seem happy over all. Of course they miss their friends and realtives over there, just like I do! But you'll always miss somebody... especially when your family live very spread out! But as long as we are content in the moment, and with what we have each day, those things become easier to handle.
Some people ask if we are staying here, we originally talked about living here for 2-3 years. Some people said before we moved "Oh, you'll be back here in 2 years!" others predicted we won't come back at all. (besides for visits) At this point I think we are staying here for many years to come. 1st of all, I'm not interested in uprooting and moving our kids every few years, especially since moving back to where we used to live would not be an option. So if we moved back, it would be starting new all over again, in a new city etc. Does not sound appealing right now. Some of the reasons that made us move in the 1st place, we really would miss moving back, and why "fix" something if it's not broken??
I like to tell the kids that this is where we live now, feel free to root yourself.
If they knew that "We might be moving back in 2-3 years", would they dare to fully spread their wings and embrace all the new? And then after a few years, we aren't able to move back, and they feel disappointed?
I don't know if there is a "right or wrong" way to do a big life change like this, but being honest makes it easier. And I couldn't honetly tell them "in 2 or 3 years this or that will happen!" That's impossible!
Who knows what will happen in the next few years?? Besides, then our oldest kids will be in highschool, and highschool here and overseas is very different, so the older the kids are, the harder a move would be.
2 years ago it seemed very strange to move here. I was almost due with our youngest, and our overseas plans were just starting to gain momentum. So much have happened since then, and I guess time will tell how this move has changed our lives for better and worse. I like to look at the good stuff thou, and so far, so good! I realize that giving a timeline for a move like this is really quite pointless (unless you move on a one or two year work visa, where your company helps you with the moving costs, and you plan on returning to your old place, that's different). We sold our house, brought all our belongings with us, my husband quit his job... so after cutting all the ties like that, it's a lot more work going back.
So.... now you know where that stands! I guess we are Finns now! :)

Barney got it right!
"A Thankful heart is a happy heart, be glad for what you have - it's an easy way to start!"
This familiar kid's song comes to my mind on a regular basis, because it's so true!!
If you really are thankful for what you DO have, it sure saves us from a lot of aggrevation wishing for what we don't
It's so easy to "compare up the ladder", meaning, we compare what we have (or don't) to those that seeminly have MORE! I like to "compare down"... and again and again realize how much I have!
I have a pretty impatient nature, and I'm not too keen on waiting on anything. Take a clean house for example. Well, in a family of 9 that is a continous struggle. so when I feel stressed and frustrated about the chaos, and wish that I had a magic wand that would make all the kids disappear (just for like an hour or so), so that I could clean undisturbed.... I have to stop and ask myself "Why is it so important? IF everything really was in it's right place, all projects taken care of, closets organized etc etc... then WHAT??" What is it that I want to accomplish? What goal am I reaching for? And why? To have a clean house really does matter to me, so I know that in the end, I will feel happier from that, although I have to learn to sit down and ignore the mess and just BE sometimes... My dear Hubby is good at reminding me about this. "Just relax!, then we can all clean up, and it doesn't take that long anyway!" He's of course right... but I can be stubborn...
So how does this relate to being happy with what you have?
Well, if you are always struggling to get to the next step up, and never stop and look behind and enjoy the view - so far!, what's the point of the climb?
I used to care a lot more about what "others might think".
What a waste of time!!! As long as I am not rude, ignorant or impolite to others, what do I owe them??
What if my standards are not the same as theirs? What if they are happy with less? How can somebody else dictate what's best for anybody else than themselves?
If there were no guidelines around the world for what the "norm" is... Then how would the world look? I think most of us would be happy with a lot less! And rather spend the extra time with our loved ones, than chasing the opportunity of making an extra dollar. But because media pushes us to believe that we indeed "need" the latest gadget, a bigger this and a smaller that... We think that we have to live up to that expectation, and get cought up in the race.
"The one who has the most stuff when he dies wins!" - attiude.
Makes me kind of sickish to think about actually.
I realize that different people also have very different views on what's "the basics" in life. And many many grownups these days walk around with a "I deserve this" attitude. Passing it along to their kids.
It has to be the latest and greatest and highest quality... and then when they have it, they somehow think that these items make them "more" than others!!!
If you really had to face the option to lose either all your money and stuff or your loved ones... I sure hope this would be a very easy choice. So why do so many people act the opposite way?
"When I have made this much money, and got to this or that status level, THEN I'm gonna take my family on the vacation of their lifetime!" Why???
Did you ask your kids if this is what they want? What if you turn around one day and realize that "Oh! They are all grown up and I don't even know them..."
"Be glad for what you have, it's an easy way to start!"
PS: One more thing... Many people keep wishing that they were somebody else, or had somebody elses life, but when it really really comes down to it, most of us would end up choosing our own shoes after all...

April Sun brings May Snow???
Hm. Interesting. I'm used to April being the month with rain one moment sun the next and then wind and hail, but this April has been gorgeous, sunny and warm. The snow melted, flowers bloomed and the trees got green, all in a matter of a few weeks. Well. Now it's May! And we woke up to snow in the air! It doesn't seem to stick to the ground, fine w. me!!, but still... Ah well. It's just weather, and I assume this is just the winter's last "Hurrah!" before summer comes... ;) Right??
Last Saturday I spent working at our house alongside Big Guy! Fun!! Our oldest girls helped out watching the younger ones for the day, and we got in about 6½ hrs of work. I did mostly cleaning, but I also helped with some actual construction stuff as well as carrying a bunch of bricks inside for our fireplace. At the end of our workday we stopped by at McDonald's for a quick dinner on our way home. I felt like "one of the guys" in my dusty clothes and scratched up hands! (any guy who's reading this is probably rolling their eys, but I did enjoy myself, and it was a great time to just hang out w. my Hubby!!)
At home things had gone well. Our 2nd oldest had organized a picnic lunch outside, and our oldest girl had been her buys self. She had ironed "the pile", hung up laundry, reorganized the whole livingroom, reorganized and cleaned our bedroom as well as taking care of and putting our Little Guy to sleep...
Wow! Pretty amazing I think! We sure appreaciate their helpfulness. I guess they want the house to get done as much as we do....
Today my cousin is starting to build the fireplace, the mudder and sander guy is in full swing, Big Guy is finishing up some drywall stuff downstairs... and yeah, it's getting done!!
And Oh!! Our 2nd oldest, who'll find any animal anywhere (she's spotted lizards on our property already) cought a glimps of a Viper on the neighbours lot!! Yikes.... I guess I'm gonna see if there are some plants we could grow that keep those suckers away!! :( Anyway... Off to another Monday, have a good one folks! Yes, I'll see if I can get some more pictures on here soon....

The Purse
OK. Here comes a warning. I'm not a seamstress. I am an impatient sewer who only wants to get the project done, and as with many things in my life, I have to practice at taking my time doing the task at hand... Anyway.
This fabric...
My daughter found it at a 2nd hand shop, and I decided to use part of it to make her a purse for her 13th Birthday....
I cut out some fabric... (no it's not gonna be an elephant!)
I didn't take any "in progress" pictures... But here are a few of the done deal

Fortunately my daughter really liked it, so if she's happy, I'm happy!!
(I made several compartments inside, and even a pocket for her cellphone)
It was super easy to make, even with 3 "helpers" at my side... the youngest would randomly push down the sewing machine pedal under the table for added excitement!
He, he... Nobody got hurt during the making of the purse, and any child labour was on a pure volunteer basis!

More Finland...
OK. I promised some more about Finland. With friends and family spread out over this planet, covering 10 time zones, it is hard to keep in touch with you all. My one sister asks me occasionally how we are doing over here, because "so and so" was wondering! Well. We are officially doing really well! So now you can share that piece of info with whomever your heart desires! I'm glad to say that too btw!
Last fall was a whirlwind of activities. It seemed like and endless stream of practical things that needed our attention. Importing the cars. Finding a new doctor for our diabetic daughter. Planning for our house. All school related things for our 4 schoolaged kids. Getting in to the "system" in a new country. Well, I'm glad to say that most of those things are now out of the way, and the wheels are turning more smoothly. As all that went on thou, I never felt that I had the time to "feel" how I felt about living here. It felt as if we were still in "moving mode". Then Christmas came out of nowhere, and with that a nice visit from my parents. Then we headed up to Northern Sweden and Norway to share the Christmas and New Year holiday with family and friends. Coming back here after being gone for 11 days actually felt like coming HOME! The kids felt that way too! That was such a neat experience.... Driving down the main highway of our city, with all the lights and snow, feeling like home! We all took that as a good sign!
January is January. Right? I never heard anybody claiming January to be their favourite month of the year, and for a good reason I think.... We did have a pretty mild January however, so that meant the kids were outside a lot! Yohoo!!! That pretty much saved us all from severe cabin fever! Talking about which, we have been relatively healthy I feel. We had a bout of some fever and flu, but that's pretty much it!
I can feel a difference in the air compared to Windsor thou. Normally our kids have runny noses all winter, but here they have barely used a Kleenex!
Things to be thankful for. Health!
Lately I've had the time to reflect on how we are all doing here. And I've had some "heart to heart talks" with the kids as well. After the obvious fact that we all miss many dear friends and family members, they have all said that they really like it here!
The school is a lot more relaxed as far as regulations. They ski and skate and play freely in the snow. They enjoy textile and woodwork class, and my oldest daughter told me that they are allowed to use paint here in art class "Becasue nobody is worried about making a mess!!!" (she's almost 13 btw...)
Wow. I was a bit stunned that this had actually stopped them from using paint in the classroom back in Canada! The language is coming along for all of us, although we sometimes wish we could fastforward the learning pace. But, each day it gets a bit better!
Now we are looking forward to another summer here. Hopefully in our new house! The kids can't wait to pick blueberries and enjoy the beautiful nature that is right THERE!!! So! I'm happy to say that we are doing well and feel positive about the future in this new country of ours!
And Oh! I almost forgot, there are many stores that I haven't visited yet.... for me to discover!!
